Authurs seat & 2 Bays Trail Circuit

December 30, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm AEDT

Tickets are not available as this event has passed.

Come along during the lovely summer months to further explore this well-known feature of Melbournes bayside geography. Test your fitness on the initial climb up the hill, then enjoy the meandering paths around the summit areas, before visiting lookouts, waterfalls, and art carvings. Once we’ve seen enough, it’s time for the wickedly fun and thigh testing downhill back to the start. Finishing a minutes drive from the beach, this is a great opportunity to make a day of the bay.

Length 12km

Grade 3 – good trails but some steep hills

Meeting location:  Latrobe Parade Carpark, Arthurs Seat (at the junction with Bayview Road)

Arthur's seat mapFrom Latrobe Parade Carpark, cross Bunurong Track and follow the path directly opposite. This track (which is part of the Two Bays Walking Track) climbs steeply up the northern slopes of Arthurs Seat. Be sure to stick to the left at the first junction (after 300m) and to the right at the next junction (after 1.4km). Also, disregard any minor tracks and the signed turn-off to Ministers Lookout (though it would only be a 110 metre detour if you did want to have a look).

The next junction will be a T-intersection. To the left is Seawinds Gardens but you will want to head to the right. You will immediately pass Cook Street Track on your right and a mowed vehicle track on your left (which appears to be a continuation of Cook Street Track) so be sure to ignore both of these. Instead, follow the walking track which turns around to head south. You will know you are on the right track when you see signs mentioning the Two Bays Walking Track.

Next, you should come across a well-signed 4-way junction. Veer to the left, along the track to Kings Falls. From Kings Falls, retrace your steps from Kings Falls Circuit, back to the Cook Street Track turn-off. Here it would be a good idea to head east (right) into the Seawinds Gardens and from there, check out the Bay and Northern Lookouts. There are also some interesting sculptures by the indigenous artist William Ricketts and another lookout at Matthew Flinders Cairn. Once you’ve had a look around, return back to the Cook Street intersection and retrace your path back to Latrobe Parade Carpark.

Once in the carpark, follow the track from the info shelter to Bay Lookout and on to Northern Lookout, William Rickett’s Sculptures and Matthew Flinders Cairn. From here, head to summit lookout and follow the downhill track underneath the chairlift to the tea rooms at the bottom. From the grassy area next to the carpark, follow an unsigned track across Dromana Cemetary Road back to Latrobe Parade Carpark.
